Britain's Best-Loved Comedians: Ten Names and the Facts Behind Them

Meet ten of Britain's best-loved comedians, with checked ages, careers and family facts, plus a tribute to Sean Lock.

You're watching a panel show or a clip someone has sent you, and you start wondering who actually counts as one of Britain's great comedians. One defensible list: Rowan Atkinson, Billy Connolly, Peter Kay, Lee Mack, Dawn French, John Cleese, Bradley Walsh, Richard Ayoade, Sean Lock and Nina Conti. That ranking is a matter of taste, not measurement. The facts about each of them can be checked, and older lists often get them wrong. Here is who these ten are, with ages and details correct as of October 2026.

The elder statesmen

John Cleese shows how far back this list reaches. He was born John Marwood Cleese on October 27, 1939. He co-founded the comedy troupe Monty Python, and he co-wrote and starred in the sitcom Fawlty Towers. At 6 feet 5 inches (about 1.96 metres), he is also the tallest person here.

Rowan Atkinson belongs to the next generation. He was born on January 6, 1955, and is 71. He has three children: Benjamin and Lily with his former wife, Sunetra Sastry, and Isla with his partner, Louise Ford.

Billy Connolly has had the most formal recognition. He was named a Knight Bachelor in June 2017, and Prince William knighted him at Buckingham Palace on October 31, 2017. His formal title is Sir William Connolly. He was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2013 and retired from live stand-up in 2018. That retirement is real, even if his reputation is not going anywhere.

Dawn French turns 69 today: she was born on October 11, 1957, in Holyhead, Wales. On April 22, 2013, she married Mark Bignell, a charity executive, in Mawgan Porth, Cornwall.

Still in the spotlight

Connolly has left the stage, but Peter Kay went back to it. Kay was born on July 2, 1973, and is now 53. After 12 years away from stand-up, he launched his arena tour Better Late Than Never in December 2022, and his residencies at The O2 in London broke records. He has been married to Susan Gargan since 2001.

Lee Mack is not the name on his birth certificate. He was born Lee Gordon McKillop on August 4, 1968, and is 58. He married Tara McKillop in 2005, and they have three children: Arlo, Louie and Millie.

Bradley Walsh's family details are often muddled. He married Donna Derby in 1997, and their son Barney was born that year. His daughter, Hayley, was born in 1982 from an earlier relationship with Debby Parker, so she is not Donna Derby's child. If you're hoping to follow him on social media, he doesn't run personal Twitter or Instagram accounts.

Comedy from a different angle

Not everyone on the list does traditional stand-up or sitcom work. Richard Ayoade hosted Channel 4's revival of The Crystal Maze from 2017 until the series ended in 2020, so anyone calling him its current host is out of date. He married the actress Lydia Fox in 2007, and they have three children.

Nina Conti stands out on a list of familiar faces. She was born on June 5, 1974, and is 52. Her parents are the actors Tom Conti and Kara Wilson. She was married to the comedian Andrew "Stan" Stanley, and they had two children before they separated.

Remembering Sean Lock

Sean Lock cannot be listed as an active comedian. In 2000 he won the British Comedy Award for Best Live Comic, and that same year he was nominated for the Perrier Comedy Award at the Edinburgh festival. He died of lung cancer at his home in London on August 16, 2021, aged 58. He is on this list as a tribute. Any ranking of British comedians that leaves him off loses something.
