Were the voices of Mickey and Minnie Mouse married?

Wayne Allwine (Mickey) and Russi Taylor (Minnie) married in 1991. Here's how they met, their careers, and who voices the mice now.

It's October, and if you've been looking up couples' costumes for Halloween, Mickey and Minnie have probably come up. They're one of the oldest pairs in animation, and you may have heard that the actors who voiced them were married too. That's true. Wayne Allwine, the voice of Mickey Mouse, and Russi Taylor, the voice of Minnie, married in 1991. Here is who they were, how they met and who voices the two mice now.

Yes, they were married

Allwine and Taylor married in 1991 and stayed married until Allwine died in 2009. For close to two decades, the voices of Mickey and Minnie were husband and wife off screen too.

Both had long careers in the parts. Allwine voiced Mickey for 32 years, and Taylor voiced Minnie for more than 30. They also met at work, during a recording session for a Minnie Mouse TV special.

The two had no single wedding day story that made the news. What people remember is how long they lasted, both in the roles and together. To see how they ended up in the same studio, start with Allwine, who reached Disney first.

Wayne Allwine, the third Mickey

Mickey Mouse has had very few official voices. Walt Disney voiced Mickey first. Jimmy MacDonald, a sound-effects expert at the studio, took over from him. Wayne Allwine was the third.

Allwine joined Disney in 1966 in the mailroom. From there he moved into sound production, the same field as MacDonald, who became his mentor. That training under the man voicing Mickey led to his own turn in the part.

Allwine took over the voice in 1977 and kept it until 2009, a run of 32 years. That made him the longest-serving Mickey up to then, longer than Walt Disney himself. Across those decades he voiced the character in films, TV and theme park shows, and he kept the high, friendly voice that audiences had known since the 1920s.

Disney named him a Disney Legend in 2008, the company's honor for people who made a major mark on its history.

When Allwine started as Mickey in the late 1970s, Minnie's current voice was still years away from Disney.

Russi Taylor, Minnie and more

Russi Taylor won the role of Minnie Mouse in 1986. Her obituary in the Telegraph says she beat about 200 other hopefuls for the part. She went on to voice Minnie for more than 30 years.

Minnie wasn't her only famous voice. Taylor voiced Huey, Dewey and Louie, Donald Duck's nephews, on DuckTales. On The Simpsons she voiced Martin Prince, the class know-it-all, and Sherri and Terri, the twins who tease Bart. If you watched cartoons in the late 1980s or the 1990s, you heard her voice often, probably without knowing it was the same person.

That range is part of why her Minnie stood out. Taylor gave the character a sweet, bright voice that stayed the same for three decades, through new films, TV shows and theme park attractions.

Getting the part in 1986 didn't mean meeting her Mickey right away. That happened two years later.

How they met and married

Allwine and Taylor met in 1988 at a recording session for Totally Minnie, a TV special about Minnie. By then Taylor had been voicing Minnie for about two years and Allwine had been Mickey for about eleven.

They married in 1991. Taylor later said their co-workers took the news well: "Everyone thought it was sweet that we were together, though we kept it quiet for a while."

The couple didn't keep their work and home lives fully apart. They appeared on radio together speaking as Mickey and Minnie, so listeners heard a real married couple playing the famous pair. They also ran a production company together, Taylor-Allwine Associates.

It's a rare story in voice acting. Two actors cast years apart, for characters who had been a couple since the 1920s, ended up becoming a couple themselves.

After Allwine, after Taylor

Wayne Allwine died on May 18, 2009, at age 62, of complications of diabetes. His understudy, Bret Iwan, took over as Mickey.

Russi Taylor died in July 2019 at age 75. Disney announced her death on July 27. Bob Iger, then head of Disney, said: "Minnie Mouse lost her voice with the passing of Russi Taylor."

Kaitlyn Robrock took over as Minnie in 2019. She had worked at Disneyland since 2003, and in a 2021 D23 interview she said she focused on the small details Taylor brought to Minnie. Bret Iwan said in the same interview that getting to know Taylor, and through her Allwine, taught him how much the role deserves respect.

Iwan and Robrock have voiced Mickey and Minnie in Disney projects such as Mickey Mouse Funhouse, and they've appeared at Disney events as the characters' voices. So when you see a Mickey and Minnie couples' costume this Halloween, the voices behind the originals belonged to a real married couple.
