Best Clean Comedians: Family-Friendly Stand-Up

Stand-up the whole family can watch together, from Brian Regan and Jim Gaffigan to Nate Bargatze, Leanne Morgan and Bob Newhart. Clean doesn't mean tame.

The holidays are coming, and with them the question every family hits after dinner: what can we put on that grandma, the teenagers and the 10-year-old will all laugh at? The answer is clean comedy: stand-up without swearing or adult material. It's harder than it looks. Without shock to lean on, every joke has to work on its own.

The masters

Brian Regan. Many comedians name him as one of the best of all time. Regan is physical, silly and precise, with bits about eating, school and doctors' offices that make kids and adults laugh at the same moments. He has several specials on Netflix.

Jim Gaffigan. Food, laziness, and being a dad of five. Gaffigan is famous for his "inner voice" whisper that comments on his own act. His specials include Mr. Universe and Cinco, and he's been nominated for multiple Grammys.

Nate Bargatze (born 1979, Nashville, Tennessee). A slow, sleepy Southern delivery that hides very sharp writing. Bargatze became one of the biggest touring comedians in America, and in 2025 he hosted the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards.

Bob Newhart (1929–2024). The original. His 1960 album The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart won the Grammy for Album of the Year, a rare feat for a comedy record. His one-sided phone call routines still hold up.

Clean, and very much their own

Jerry Seinfeld. He's long been known for working clean. Seinfeld's stand-up is built on tiny everyday observations, polished for years before they reach the stage.

Steven Wright. Deadpan one-liners so dry they almost blow away. He also won an Oscar for the short film The Appointments of Dennis Jennings. See our deadpan comedians list.

Jeff Foxworthy. "You might be a redneck if..." and the Blue Collar Comedy Tour made him one of the best-selling comedians ever.

Henry Cho (born in Knoxville, Tennessee). A Korean American comic with a Southern accent who has built a whole career on clean, friendly stand-up.

Leanne Morgan. A Tennessee mom who started out selling jewelry at home parties and broke through in her 50s. Her Netflix special I'm Every Woman came out in 2023.

Ellen DeGeneres. Before the talk show, she was a stand-up, and her specials, including Relatable (2018), are mostly family-safe.

Before you press play

"Clean" usually means no swearing and no sex jokes, not that every topic is for little kids. Watch the first few minutes yourself if you have young ones, and check the rating on the streaming service. Most of the comics above have short clips on their official YouTube channels, which is an easy way to test the room.
